Patrick McMullan hosted the first in a roster of fabulous parties in anticipation of the Oscars this Sunday. He officially launched his “Glamour Girls” tome on the sunnier, and no doubt, warmer American coast at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. He was met there by a bevy of now Los Angeles-based, New York social figures, including Alexandra von Furstenberg, Cornelia Guest, and Casey Johnson, along with the members of formal society there, consisting of the fashionable wives of Hollywood’s power players. The premiere’s host committee shimmered in diamonds by Leviev, the night’s underwriter. The ladies shimmered even more naturally the next day at the event’s after-party extension in the spa of the Equinox Club in Century City.

1. TX - February 22, 2008

Dabney looks like a doll!

2. Jenn - February 22, 2008

Oh goodness… Dabney’s dressed like it’s Senior Day at Episcopalian… but she really does have an adorable quality about her.

Cornelia is so pretty. She looks like she is above all of this.

Alexandra von F. is wearing Alexander Wang! I have the same exact shirt. Ryan (Christian Slater’s ex) is so beautiful.

3. ecl - February 22, 2008

dabney mercer’s outfit is a disaster. leggings are not cute people!!

4. Sigh - February 22, 2008

Disappointing all around. Normally like Dabney, but maybe the skirt and the big gold hoops are not my favorite. Although the skirt does emphasize how slim she is through the hips and thighs. How tall is Lady Victoria Hervey? She looks like she is towering over the peasantry (ha- I mean that as a compliment!).

5. HHH - February 22, 2008

Why is Dabney wearing the Spence kilt? She looks ridiculous
Love Casey’s dress and shoes
Nice arm sausages, Cornelia
Is it any wonder that Alex left Alexandra?
Ryan is beautiful
Crystal is very nice…love her earrings
Nice jewels on Brooke…Too bad about the saggy bruised boob

6. Charlotte York - February 22, 2008

Dabney looks like she missed her way to field hockey practice or something… I was laughing at the Episcopalian comment! :-D What a preppy girl.

Alexandra should not have stood next to Ryan. She’s abusing her tanner to make her face more angular… I like her hair though.

Funny how Christian Slater went from one rich girl to the next (Tamara Mellon)…

7. Becca - February 22, 2008

I am a new fan of Ryan Haddon. She’s so beautiful! Christian Slater, eat your heart out.

8. Jimmy Choo - February 22, 2008

Casey, were is you posture? I Love your dress and your shoes !!

9. BB - February 22, 2008

Cornelia is too old to show underboob like that. Cover those things up! Alexandra looks way older than she is with that sunken in face. Eat something and lay off the self tanner! Dabney always looks like a doll that child has played dress up with.

10. xtina in chi - February 22, 2008

Haha, Dabney can’t dress. Money can’t buy an eye for style.

Casey needs to take some ice off, it’s obnoxious.

Ryan for the win.

11. Upper East Sider - February 22, 2008

Cornelia “Deb of the Decade” Guest still looks good in my book. I can’t imagine someone having a better society background than her. Phew!

Dabney has a super adorable persona and face. I just wish her big sis Tinsley would show her how to dress up like a lady. See, the jacket she’s wearing is cute. Just pair it with some nice jeans and she would have looked great. Did she really have to wear a freaking kilt to a party in Hollywood? Dabney, we know you and Tinsley are two of the WASPiest in the social circuit… but come on now! ;)

Casey is cute. I love her dress (looks like a wrap dress by Herve Leger) and her hair is so full. Love her jewels and how she wears them effortlessly.

12. Pam Stein 26 from the 10005 - February 22, 2008

I Heart Casey Johnson! Cute Cute Cute

13. Constance - February 22, 2008

The second I graduated from prep school, I vowed never to wear the uniform again. Did they have to wear uni’s at Episcopal?

Dabney has an adorable face. Her bleach job is looking a bit ashy, but it can happen to anyone. I feel like it has been a long time since we have seen Casey J. out on the town. The Herve Leger looks good on her.

14. glamorouslife - February 22, 2008

Dabney’s hair looks too white/ashy- agreed!

15. Katt - February 22, 2008

Alexandra Miller looks very thin. And why is Brooke Davenport showing so much? It does not look nice….

16. lillibet - February 22, 2008

alexandra has the face of a 50yr. old

17. Katt - February 22, 2008

I agree with Lillibet, and I think Alexandra is in her mid thirties, because she is the younger of the Miller sisters. Does anyone know how old she is?

18. NY - February 22, 2008

Alexandra von F… well at least she has all of her daddy’s billions. And was once married to someone super hot. She’s 35, Katt. She’s actually quite beautiful… I think she just used the self-tanner a bit too much here. A different color for the lips and maybe something different around her eyes would help.

Love Casey. Her dress is sizzling!

Are Cornelia’s hoo has real?

19. Just me - February 22, 2008

Someone should have told Cornelia that the dress is way too young for her. And what was Brooke thinking? Somewhere along the line these women stop looking at themselves critically in a mirror. Just because the outfit fits doesn’t mean you should wear it.

20. PB - February 22, 2008

I can’t get over how petite and cute Dabney is. She is a living doll. Glad that she high-tailed it out of Cucina for some fun in LA. I have to agree about Ryan’s assessment: she is so gorgeous. Wow! Casey Johnson is a sweet girl and definitely the smartest out of her coterie of friends (Paris, Nicky, etc). She looks nice here.

21. xoJacquelinexo - February 22, 2008

I wonder why Casey did not feel the need to run a brush through that hair…. ruined the look for me the rest of it is fantastic. Dabney does look adorable but I would not have worn the open toe shoes.

22. Kimberly - February 22, 2008

i love caseys dress…good fit….the jewelry on the neckline and ears is great…too much on the wrists….and the shoes are too heavy for the look.

23. Montecito Sunshine - February 22, 2008

Alexandra and Ryan look fierce. Absolutely stunning but would scratch your eyes out if you crossed either one of them.

24. missy - February 22, 2008

Dabney is adorable! She looks so good- above the knees. If only she’d have worn complete tights and closed toe shoes, she would have looked perfect!
Love Casey’s dress, but not on her… and I don’t understand the delicate accessories and the heavy shoes. She looks very Betsey Johnson, and only Betsy Johnson can pull that off.

25. glamorouslife - February 22, 2008

Newsflash- Alexandra is not cute at all. The “poor” girl has problems with anorexia, a statement made public by her publicist Paul Wilmot. She is probably upset her ex just got engaged to AK. Feel kinda bad, but she’s still not cute.

26. thatcher - February 22, 2008

Alex Von Furstenberg has a very long, horse-like face. Yikes!

27. ASG - February 22, 2008

I want to like her so much b/c I’m a big fan of her sister but Dabney has no charm to her. Her smile is unnatural (i.e., always looks fake) and her outfits typically do not work. Here, she looks like a misinformed teenager from the midwest–too trendy and outdated.

Casey looks like a much older woman, who’s done way too much work on her face–very plastic. Alexandra looks timely and appropriate. Ryan is stunning. Everyone else looks blase.

28. maricris - February 22, 2008

Dabney looks just unnatural overall, i feel. Cannot compare to the rest of ny society.
Alexandra just is awful-looking, I’m sorry to say. I don’t find A.Kay that good looking, but Alexandra is just awful, I’m so sorry !
Ryan is gorgeous.

29. Mrs. C - February 22, 2008

Yeah - for Casey; she looks wonderful and healthy….
Ryan Hadden WOW - she’s lovely; kinda looks like Dr. Lisa.
As for the rest - well keep on trying.

30. SuSu - February 22, 2008

Sorry, Dabney - but you really missed it with this look. We know you can do better! Ryan is gorgeous!
What’s with the leopard clodhoppers on Casey Johnson? She’s petite to begin with and they totally ruin her look.
Glad to see Cornelia - a true socialite - she’s lovely and if she can’t flash a little clevage, who can? Most of these writers need to get over the age issue - with any luck, it comes to all.
And to #25 - VERY cheap shot. Its one thing to comment, another to take a shot at someone with a serious illness. I don’t think you feel bad about it at all.

31. HONOR - February 23, 2008

Alex….I know you do not read this column…..but my prayers are
with you. THE MILLER GIRLS HAVE ALWAYS ROCKED.

THIS SHOWS US THAT NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY WE HAVE
WE GO THRU THE SAME THING AS EVERYONE ELSE…..DIVORCE…
CHEATING…….. YOU NAME IT! IT HAPPENS

32. HONOR - February 23, 2008

DABNEY……..PLEASE YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS……
DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE…TINSLEY IS WHAT SHE IS….YOU DO
NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW HER FOOT STEPS……BE YOUR OWN GIRL…

33. Kimberly - February 23, 2008

#31 Honor–actually, statistically, it happens even more in the social elite.

divorce rate higher.

34. SF - February 23, 2008

Dabney’s outfit is a total mess. Not a thing right about it. Malfunctioning doll, maybe.

Yes, Alex taking a pic with Ryan was not a good idea. I think Alex would have fared better if she stood next to ANY of the others!

35. NYBlondes - February 23, 2008

Dabney is so cute!

36. downtowner - February 23, 2008

I think the mmarital and emotional problems are more frequent with more money/power/success actually, not the other way around.

Bigger egos, more temptation, more loyalties to your own roots instead of starting a family of your own, more desperation, more appearance-orientation, therefore more hypocrisy, vanity, lying, etc etc etc. No grounding if you don’t work. A general jadedness and lack of fulfillment in life when you’ve seen it all, had it all etc.

37. SBandT - February 23, 2008

i bought dabney’s skirt two years ago at intermix… i’ve never worn it because i realized after i look like im in a catholic school girls halloween costume

38. SBandT - February 23, 2008

also, casey johnson looks like rosie perez and alexandra has the longest face i have ever seen

39. caitlin - February 23, 2008

Casey has lost a LOT of weight! She looks fab.

40. HONOR - February 24, 2008

Kim and Downtowner……what do I know….I been there and done that…..but you both make sense.

41. sr_cuervo - February 24, 2008

Dabney looks like she is right off 42nd street looking for a trick.

42. Still A Lady - February 24, 2008

Cornelia can do whatever she wants. She is the queen of society and always will be, no matter where she lives. (and yes, they’re real - always had cleavage to die for - caused QUITE the scene when she was 18 with everyone worrying whether her strapless (deb) gowns would stay up for the whole night! Ahhh… those were the days…)

43. maddoxbromley - February 24, 2008

#30- I read it online too. It’s actually her publicist who should be ashamed that he made it public. He had no business in doing so, and made it public knowledge. If she needs treatment, then she should get it. I am all for people being healthy. #25 was bringing up a factual point, and he or she is not to blame, it’s AVF’s publicist who is.

44. serendipity - February 24, 2008

Hilarious comments, all of you! Brava! Yup, Casey Johnson is the blond Rosie Perez. Spot on, #38. I wondered who she reminded me of and split a gut when I read your post. Alexandra - lay off the bleach blond look and choose a hair color closer to your natural one. The pale pink lipstick does nothing for you. She may look a bit harsh here, but I still think she’s better looking than Ali K. I also think Ali has the same long horse face. I also think Alexandra is ~38. She’s the same age or a smidge older than Alex von F.

45. serendipity - February 24, 2008

Is Dabney capable of any look other than that clenched teeth, insincere smile look. Every single time I see her, she reminds me of one of the two blond sisters being “protected” by the Wayan Brothers in their hilarious movie “White Chicks”. Sorry, Dabs! But thanks for the laugh!

46. HHH - February 24, 2008

Cornelia is a vicious, spoiled bitch, just like her mother was. Entertaining but nasty, nasty, nasty. I wonder why she has never gotten married….?

47. Lila Fowler - February 24, 2008

Alex is fabulous. I just wish she was smiling. She has this amazing smile that brightens up the world. Beautiful.

48. Jimmy Choo - February 24, 2008

Oh Gosh.Poor Cornelia. She is pretty. Older yes…But she has style.

49. Katya - February 24, 2008

Casey lost weight, good for her!

50. Social - February 25, 2008

sr-cuervo-, I would love to know who you are. I have noticed that you always say something ugly about either Tinsley or Dabney. It doesn’t matter what they are wearing or how good they look. You will always be negative. What is your problem?

51. Parker - February 25, 2008

I have always loved the Miller sisters. I used to think Alex was the most beautiful one but time and life has not been kind to her. Alexandra actually spoke about her anorexia in a Vogue article last year and about how it is a disease that is never totally cured. She has been through Hell and back and from what I understand is simply trying to raise her children well.

Lady Victoria Hervey is hot in that ‘I don’t give a damn’ European way.

52. chicfromparis - February 25, 2008

ooh they are beautiful <3

53. sr_cuervo - February 25, 2008

Social#50,No problem whatsoever just telling it as I see it.

54. papfan - February 25, 2008

Lady Victoria is not hot in the least. Well, maybe for a Brit…

Cornelia’s cleavage isn’t enviable and I doubt anyone doubt the authenticity of her old lady boobage.

Casey looks great and I love her excessive ornamentation. I mean, the girl is RICH and not ashamed of it!

55. downtowner - February 25, 2008

Cornelia has the back page of the NY Times T Magazine talking about her first red Valentino dress that she wore to a deb ball when 20. It’s a charming article.

Speaking of charming, Tinsley is absolutely adorable in Harper’s Bazaar. Her apartment, a little much, but her bright personality and clever self-deprecation make her a real gem.

I have never before been a Tinsley fan, I am saying this in earnest.

56. Jimmy Choo - February 25, 2008

Who is Cornelia ? l really now her.

57. Kimberly - February 25, 2008

#55 downtowner - can i access this article online?

if not, what month is the issue?

58. Bess - February 25, 2008

Tinsley is positively amazing in the Harper’s Bazaar piece! What a beautiful girl and her home looks perfect. It’s not online unfortunately… but you can see it in the current March issue of HB.

Alexandra von F. is really striking in person. This picture is definitely not her best! Her friend, Ryan, looks very beautiful.

59. Suzette - February 25, 2008

You can see Tinsley’s home online at the Harper’s Bazaar site by typing her name in the space at the top and it will come up. I wonder who the decorator is?

60. Parker - February 25, 2008

Alex would probably be beautiful here if she was smiling. She has beautiful teeth.

I too am more fond of Tinsley after the HB article. How can you fault a girl for marketing herself and making something out of a simple hairstyle and look? If people want to buy into it, why not? It’s harmless and as she says in the article, probably fleeting. The fact that she is so popular in Japan and is not a 18 year old drug addict is cool. I think I like the girl.

61. Kimberly - February 25, 2008

found the article….looks like the interior designer is her mother.

i liked some of the home…and some was too much.

the bedroom threw me…if it is a shared bedroom, then i think it should be decorated in a way that wouldnt make the partner uncomfortable there in any way…a bedroom, to me, should always be an oasis and restful place.

if her bedroom is shared with topper…it seems much too fussy for him to sleep peacefully there.

62. UESgirl - February 25, 2008

Sorry Tinsley place look pretty but in a showroom kind of way-beautiful in the store but not someplace I want to live in. That bed is definitely not where her husband sleeps. I know she descended from the south etc. but those old family portraits look pretentious and out of place with the decor. She should consult Aerin or Samantha.. their houses appeared in Vogue and House Beautiful a while back. beautiful and timely without the showroom quality and pretentiousness.
Preferred Tory Burch place. as a matter of fact most of the places in the PYT book a few years back.

63. cristina - February 25, 2008

agree tinsley comes off well and somewhat self deprecating in the interview. the apt, however, especially with the paintings and the headboard in the bedroom, is a little much. especially since it is a fairly modest apartment to begin with…fine for a couple without children, but point being it’s not some grand tory burch type apartment and did not cost a lot at all by ny standards.

some may disagree but i respect her decision not to have children for the time being. maybe she doesn’t want to be a mother until she can really devote herself, unlike so many of the selfish hard partying mothers we see out all the time. yes, i am talking to you, alex kramer.

64. HHH - February 26, 2008

The apartment may not be 12 rooms on Fifth Ave but it is far from modest. It is in a very nice prewar building west of Park Avenue on 79th Street.

65. 74th - February 26, 2008

I finally saw the HB Tinsley photos, and I have to say that I think the condemnation of the bedroom is a bit much. Yes, it is very girly. However, from these descriptions, I was expecting much more over the top. I don’t think a guy would feel too too uncomfortable in there.

I loved the picture of her closet- not as many Mary Janes as expected. Also thought it was funny that her dogs are kind of pudgy.

66. James River - February 26, 2008

#62 - UES Girl - I haven’t seen the article or pictures yet but was wondering why family portraits are considered “pretentious”? It would be difficult to go into the type of home Tinsley grew up in Richmond and not find family portraits. Maybe she just took some of the things she loved to her new home? And that’s bad because???

67. uptowndowntown - February 26, 2008

the HB article made me want to barf. that apartment was done up to make her look a lot wealthier than she is, and is totally pretentious. she is absurd.

68. Jimmy Choo - February 26, 2008

Tinsley Darling. Don’t listen that bunch of jealous people. You have a Wonderful taste. We can’t please everyone!!!

69. Anaiah - February 26, 2008

i’m too lazy to scroll through the comments (67!!) so would somebody please give me the 411 on the person in the photo with ryan haddon? thanks.

70. James River - February 26, 2008

#66 And you know the balance of her bank account and how much money she has? How? People make so many interesting assumptions about what other people have or don’t have. She may not come from big “old money” in comparison to some other “socialites”, but I bet you have no idea of what she really has - or is making.

71. James River - February 26, 2008

#68 Google her name; maybe you’ll learn something.

72. 74th - February 26, 2008

James River makes a good point. Anyway, I think it is better to have a small but elaborate small apartment than buy more house than one can afford and end up having financial trouble for the sake of a big place.

73. 74th - February 26, 2008

By the way, James River, I would love to know who you are.

74. papfan - February 26, 2008

I thought the apartment was absolutely lovely. It was more modest in proportions than I expected (no she’s not Tory Burch — it’s okay to be a socialite who isn’t a married to a billionaire!), but I think it is absolute eye candy that still looks liveable. Who needs a giant apartment for entertaining when you go out all the time, anyway?

I just love her bed, and the monogrammed pillows, although it’s funny she says they have the same initials when his real name isn’t Topper, lol.

The article was such fluff, though — absolutely nothing new about the girl!! Not Tinsley’s fault, of course — Bazaar hasn’t had an original idea since 1999.

75. Southern Deb - February 26, 2008

for the love can someone post the link to this article. can’t find it.

76. Suzette - February 26, 2008

Well, since the James River is in Richmond where Tinsley grew up, I would venture to say that James River knows the elegance to which Tinsley became accustomed and knows that one could not picture her apartment looking any less than it does. It totally says Tinsley and what makes her feel at home and comfortable. After all, her mother is an interior designer and a very well sought out one too! Of course she would do her daughter’s place with her best eye for fabrics, and furnishings. I think it looks quite lovely!

77. Kimberly - February 26, 2008

#72 74th - want to know who i am? ;)

78. 74th - February 26, 2008

Sure, Kimberly! No, I am from Richmond and when Richmonders post I always think I know who they are.

79. Londoner - February 26, 2008

I saw American HB and… wow. The wallpaper and furniture is perfect in each room. The Colonial portraits of her ancestors only add an extra touch! She came out so nicely in the piece, too. She’s just having some fun for the time being before she starts a family with Topper. To think her social ascent in NYC was based upon her golden curls and feminine style is endearing indeed.

80. loverly - February 26, 2008

Kimberly - OK, sorry to sound naive but is it really THAT common for *young* socialite (or otherwise) couples to have separate bedrooms? I can picture that with couples that have been married for decades but it just throws me to think that a couple that young and apparently so in love would naturally not share a bedroom. I could not imagine not sharing a bedroom with my husband! I am not trying to be saracstic or nasty, I am asking in earnest. do tell!

81. tinsley'sbetterhalf - February 26, 2008

This TM embossed pillows were tacky and forced.

82. tinsley'sbetterhalf - February 26, 2008

Those, I mean, from the HB story.

83. Anee - February 26, 2008

Tinsley looks gorgeous in the Harper’s Bazaar piece. She shines when she goes more sophisticated rather than the crossed-legs, twirled hair, little girl act in most photos. Stunning in Bazaar. Keep it up Tinz.

84. downtowner - February 26, 2008

yea but it was kind of funny when she said she wouldn’t be comfortable with pillows a person could actually lay on comfortably.

not my style either, but you have to give her credit for knowing herself and being able to laugh about it.

That said I didn’t like the glass etchings in the dining room (slide 5 on HB online.)

85. James River - February 26, 2008

#81 - If you think embossed pillows are tacky, fine. But what does “forced” mean?

86. BB - February 26, 2008

Yes, I am not a Tinsley “fan” by any stretch of the word, but I dug those pillows. The only thing in the whole apartment I liked that I didn’t think was overly fussy (too many prints in my opinion). The monogram was kind of art deco and cool, made me wish my initials were TM so I could do the same. The rest of the apartment was just not my style, but I can appreciate why someone else would like it. We all can’t have the same taste in decor, but we assume these girls will have well done apartments and I think the Tinz succeeded in that. And no matter what you say 95% percent of the time she succeeds in what she wears and does look good. As she said, she knows what she likes and what looks good on her.

87. LA - February 26, 2008

Loverly, what are you talking about? Tinsley and Topper share the bedroom! They don’t sleep in separate rooms. The article simply states that their Upper East Side apartment has two bedrooms.

Tinsley’s whole apartment is so pretty and well done. I especially loved the monogrammed linens, the ornate bed frame, the Old World portraits, and the hanging chandeliers. She is such a pretty girl, too, and the article makes me like and root for her even more. Go Tinsley!

88. Central Park West - February 26, 2008

Was her mother, Dale Tatum Mercer, really the decorator? The place looks great and I would love to have a designer come in and make my place as nice as Tinsley’s…

89. Emily - February 26, 2008

I can’t even imagine a WASPier, more Upper East Side establishment apartment than the American socialite Mrs Tinsley Randolph Mercer Mortimer. Their family names are as ridiculous as her home. Sister Dabney’s middle name is Winston, her husband’s nickname is Topper… and I didn’t even know that their mother’s name was Dale Tatum Mercer until now. How would her great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, the radically liberal Thomas Jefferson, feel about any of this? Only in the States, I fear…

90. j - February 26, 2008

i am sorry, but is a 2 bedroom on the far east side what it takes to be a socialite in ny these days? pretty laughable i would say…

91. 74th - February 26, 2008

Cultural Difference: In the north, naming one’s child something like Tinsley seems to be an indication of..something- I’m not quite sure what. Pretension? Anyway, in the south it doesn’t have that same implication. It is just a regional habit. Old, rich families do it. New, rich families do it. And poor families (old and new!) do it too.

92. Kimberly - February 26, 2008

loverly - i am old, and recall a time very well when homes were designed not with his and her baths, but actually his and her bedrooms, sometimes connected with a common sitting room, and sometimes even with his and her sitting rooms.

i suppose that is probably very odd in today’s times, and bedrooms only become separate now with age.

but again, at one time, it really was quite the norm.

93. Kimberly - February 26, 2008

j - does the address make the person?

94. j - February 26, 2008

um, in ny? yeah, it does. as does money

95. James River - February 26, 2008

I finally bought the magazine and read the article. Exactly where does it state in the article that they share separate bedrooms (#80 loverly)? And really, who cares?

96. downtowner - February 26, 2008

it doesn’t. who knows why that is being discussed.
loverly said that it does not seem like a comfortable room for a man, if it is a shared bedroom and then things got out of control.

i hate to admit it but they seem to have a pretty tight relationship and not image oriented since he openly states that he thinks all this is bullshit but he adores her anyway.

97. Kimberly - February 26, 2008

j - im so sorry that is your view. actually, you are wrong.

unfortunately, you just dont have the life experience to know it.

98. Kimberly - February 26, 2008

james river - loverly didnt say they had separate bedrooms…i asked that question, and loverly followed up with asking me why i would think that.

99. loverly - February 26, 2008

#95 - “and really, who cares?” I do. Just as so many others care about her monogrammed pillows and the overall decor of her house. I was asking about couples in general, not just T&TM. Kimberly kindly answered my question and that was that. let’s move on.

100. James River - February 26, 2008

#98 & #99. Ok, I’m confused. Thanks for setting me straight.

101. Central Park West - February 26, 2008

Tinsley’s address is actually the ideal one. She lives in the Upper East Side, in the high 70s, west of Park Avenue, in a nice pre-war building. Sure, it’s not a Fifth Avenue twelve-bedroom as HHH said… but why would Tinsley and Topper even need one when it’s just them two and their adorable puppies?

102. Amy - February 26, 2008

She looks so much better in last picture with long straight hair - they MUST have a cozy den with comfy furniture where her husband can relax and put his feet on coffee table while throwing back a beer? - living room pretty in fussy way not comfortable for most men - love bedroom fabric - dining room looks sparse - frankly, I thought it would be more “old money” decorated and larger

103. Southern Deb - February 26, 2008

ok found it, the first spread in the orange dress doesn’t even look like her. her place is gorgeous. styled within an inch of its life but that is the style these days. i love the bedding. monograms are chic and a sign of class. any southern girl would agree.

104. big bird rules - February 26, 2008

Nah, Amy, looks like a classic six. Two bedrooms, living, dining, kitchen and a maids room which she probably turned into her dressing room since that doesn’t really look like a standard walk-in closet. So no den but Topper loves himself some Dorians so that’s his den I guess! And they’re not in the far east — they live between Park and Mad I believe. I love her place. I especially love her dining room wallpaper — soo fabulous!

105. HHH - February 26, 2008

J - It can hardly be described as a little two bedroom. This is not a crappy post war building east of third avenue.

106. Amy - February 26, 2008

#104 gotcha I hate the DR wallpaper BUT we all agree to disagree - oh yikes so the Topper has no hang out space - poor soul

107. Amy - February 26, 2008

When I posted #102 my post got cut off - I said don’t we get weary of the “Standard Oil heir” nonsense - it sounds good but maybe $$$ running our for all those heir/heriress???

108. SuSu - February 26, 2008

Checked out the Mortimer’s apt - and I think its gorgeous! Very done but charming and reflective of what we know of Tinsley. I don’t think we know enough about Topper - nor does he care if we do - to comment on his taste. And I’d be willing to bet he does have a room of his own in the place! He just didn’t want it to be photographed.

“James River” - glad someone else with taste is on this blog!

And - Southern Deb: no southern (or northern) girl of any background would ever, ever use the word “class.” If you have it, you don’t need to speak of it!

109. minnie - February 27, 2008

Susu and James River- I agree, her apt is done very tastefully and suits her character. I don’t think it looks overdone, esp. for Tinsley.

110. James River - February 27, 2008

#107 - Amy, I’ve been wondering the same thing. How many Standard Oil heirs ARE there now?

111. Southern Deb - February 27, 2008

Susu-

I disagree and have far too much class to argue with you about it. I was giving Tinsley a compliment on her design choices. My comment had nothing to do with you.

112. BB - February 27, 2008

Amy & James River, your hunches are correct. The Mortimers lost the last of their inherited money in the 80’s. Even had to unload the Hamptons house. Topper does well on his own and we can assume Tinsley’s “popularity in Japan” is paying off for her as well, but their money does not come from Standard Oil.

113. James River - February 27, 2008

I really wasn’t making a specific comment about Tinsley and Topper but honestly, everybody in the “social pages” from Houston to San Francisco to New York is a “Standard Oil heir”. I just wondered if that had any meaning at all in this day and age.

After reading at the HB article, Tinsley’s home looks exactly like I would have imagined although the living room is a little fussy. There are “southern” touches throughout and it seems to reflect her personality. She seems to know exactly what she likes to wear and how she likes to live which is refreshing.

114. gag - February 27, 2008

It’s a very pretty place, and it doesn’t have to be everyon’e taste because it’s clearly Tinz’s taste. Isn’t that why people want money, so they can live exactly as they please? On a side note, on that horrible pussycat doll show, one of the girls had long blonde ringlets and a super-short plaid skirt on with mary-janes, and I swear I had to do a double take.

115. big bird rules - February 27, 2008

Did anyone see the pic of Ryan on nypost.com today, in the page 6 section? She used to be FAT! Wow, she looks sooo much better since losing the weight and the jerky has-been husband!

116. SuSu - February 27, 2008

#111 - Your comment is just silly. I know it didn’t have anything to do with me - but you still don’t have any “class.” Truly, if you have any kind of upbringing, you would know better.

117. Southern Deb - February 28, 2008

#116 – Telling someone you don’t even know that they have no class based on one statement that you disagree with is pathetic, small minded and silly. Coming to a message board and ripping into a fellow poster based on something so ridiculously benevolent and not even remotely about you is beyond my comprehension. People use the word class all day long on this site and it is no indication of their lack there of. I am not going to rip into your upbringing because that is not my style. I would never stoop that low.

Feel free to comment back. I will no longer be checking this post and don’t care to read another word of your ugliness.

118. NC - February 28, 2008

Ladies, calm down. What is the matter with both of you? This isn’t the way of the South.

119. 74th - February 28, 2008

Oh, it totally is the way of the south. I know, because I am from there too, as mentioned before. All that “butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth” and then stab you in the back. There is definitely a type of southern woman, the self proclaimed belle, who I wouldn’t trust for a minute. And we all know it is a game, but none of us admit it. (I’m sure there is a northern equivalent.)

120. tinsley'sbetterhalf - February 29, 2008

forced- means the pillows are too contrived- she’s trying make her place look like what a socialte’s should be. It’s a little too obvious, in your face. real WAPS and socialites are made of understated elegance and class- and the pillows are just too tacky and in your face- look at me- type of detailing.

121. Social - March 1, 2008

#120, Just so you know, Tinsley’s house, the whole time she was growing up, always had lots of pillows on the bed that you had to take off before going to sleep. It was always very girly looking but beautiful and sophisticated at the same time. Why would someone like you who obviously doesn’t know a thing about decorating, make such an asinine statement?! Lets get real! It is a beautiful apartment and you know it. Would love to see your place however. Bet it is a gem!

122. James River - March 1, 2008

#120 I still don’t know what you mean. Just because you apparently don’t like monograms doesn’t mean they are “tacky” and “in your face”. Maybe it’s a southern thing but I don’t think so.

123. big bird rules - March 1, 2008

Yeah, gotta agree with Social — you are sooo off here, #121. First of all, the way you use “WASPs” and “socialiates” as if they are interchangeable is indicative of your own social standing, or lack thereof. Stop pretending to have ANY idea whatsoever what a high society domicile looks like.

124. St. Cats Girls - March 2, 2008

OK, to set the record staight, I grew up in Richmond with Tinz and Dabs and went to St. Catherine’s School with them. Everyone in Richmond knew that Tinz and Dabs lived in the biggest and fanciest house–everyone. There was no more prominant house in Richmond., Tinsley’s house was on seven acres right in the center of Richmond, with most of the houses on one acre or a little more. So, everyone recognized Tinsley’s house. I went to St. Catherine’s with Tinz, and we all used to talk about the mansion she lived in. Her mother was an incredible decorator, and her house was beautiful. Her NYC apartment is not one bit different from what she grew up in. Her Richmond house had portraits everywhere. That is the Southern way. We all put the portraits of our ancestors on display.
When I read all these comments, I realize that the people who are writing here have absolutely NO idea of old money and heritage like Tinz is used to. I just have to laugh about the “pretentious” pillows. I don’t know anyone who didn’t have beautiful pillows in their houses. The people who are writing on this blog are total losers who have NO idea of what people from privileged backgrounds live with. Get off this blog and write on some movie star sites for God’s sake. Stop pretending to know ANYTHING about someone like Tinsley. When I look at the Bazaar pictures of her apartment, what I see is a girl who has a very FEW remnants of her former life since her parents probably still have the majority of the good stuff.

125. EHS - March 2, 2008

St Cats, thank you. A lot of people here are just too dramatic and try to find the tiniest flaws to pick at. I went to EHS with Dabney and was friends with her and she doesn’t deserve all the meanness posted about her and her style choices! She’s such a cute girl. Her daddy loves her dearly and wants her to marry a good Southern boy that went to Washington & Lee, UVA, or UNC like her… because it is better than marrying some New York guy (I agree).

126. Kimberly - March 3, 2008

now THAT is comedy GOLD!

yes, NYers have no understanding of old money and heritage.

127. James River - March 3, 2008

The point being made is that NYers might not be the only ones who understand old money and heritage. Virginians are very big on heritage.

128. 74th - March 3, 2008

In some ways I think the problem in these debates (and the same debate happens about every month) is that New Yorkers and Virginians have a similar outlook regarding their own background. I have lived in both places, and it seems to me that Virginians think theirs is the only acceptable background. And New Yorkers are famous for thinking there is nothing outside of New York. So both groups are determined that the other has no idea what is a sign of good taste, or breeding (yeah, you are not going to throw me under the bus and disregard my whole comment because I did not say “class”) or whatever.

129. Kimberly - March 3, 2008

i will absolutely concede the point 74th is making…NYers do tend to play down the relevance of anywhere other than NY.

but they do understand heritage….at times, maybe too well….(keeping a name from a previous marriage that did not produce children, that is something i have never agreed with).

heritage and old money can and should buy proper manners, not be a substitute for them…but i see that happening all too often.

130. Emily Post - March 3, 2008

124.

The terms ‘fancy’ and ‘mansion’ are not words used in sophisticated circles and to do so would immediately classify him or her as a member of a low social class.

‘Elegant’ and ‘house’ are deemed more appropriate.

However, a person with good-manners would never discuss the size and supposed grandeur of someone elses house.

131. Notassnarkyasyou - March 3, 2008

Oh puleeze. And a person with good manners would never make someone else uncomfortable by pointing out their “shortcomings” in vocabulary.

132. Emily Post - March 3, 2008

Perhaps that did come off as condescending although it was not my intention.

133. Brooke - March 3, 2008

#130 come on - REAL comfortable monied people do not worry about such nonsense fancy schmancy or house/mansion - YOU are hung up on the BS - plenty of people talk about size of friend’s homes - ones with good manners - you are a goof

134. Emily Post - March 3, 2008

FYI: to use the word ‘home’ to describe a ‘house’ is also very common.

I am a linguistics major, not a debutante, so dont kill the messenger.
